Cleaning the AFM

Hey everyone,

I dont know if you know if you wear jewelery or not, but if you throw a couple polident tabs into warm water and throw your jewelry in their, it does a good job of cleaning it.

I was wondering if I remove the electronics on my AFM, could I throw it in a bucket of water? I use some cleaning agents on it? Its just metal with a metal honey comb on it. It wont effect anything right?

I wouldn't bother...but do what ya like, but then be prepared for something to go wrong.

I have heard of people doing all kinds of things to that AFM and later hear of it not working more than it was a good thing to do. There will always be some blow by so you will be cleaning it forever. At most I would only reccomend wiping any excess oil with a lent free cloth, being careful not to touch or damage the honey comb!

As you said it's just metal. As long as you remove the electronics and O rings you can do pretty much what you want. Skip the Polident though. Just hose it down with solvent or wash in hot soapy water. Rinse and let dry. Be careful not to damage the laminar flow screen and be aware there's a O ring on the metering screw. I don't follow the blowby comment because that part of the PCV system is downstream of the AFM and only flows in that direction during boost anyway. Fwiw my AFM has never needed internal cleaning. If you're using an oiled filter I can see it happening though.

Every AFM that I have ever seen has had a film of oil inside of the unit. That is where the blow by statement comes from. How elses do ya think oil gets in there.The PCV system also is plumbed pre turbo, and post AFM. To clean the outside of the afm there is no need to disassemble the unit at all. Hell the unit never was meant to be taken apart, and cleaned period. This is stated some where in the TSRM I do believe.

just dont try to clean it with the electronics in there.

take off the black box, remove the oring and spray some brake cleaner in there.
