Situation: Just installed MBC this weekend. Installed fresh set of NGK 6097's gapped at .028.

The car misses badly as soon as she hits 11-12 psi, but only when the outside temp is in the 90s, as it is today. This morning, when the car had only been running a few minutes and the outside temp was cooler, it boosted 14psi in second with no missing.

I assume that coil packs are the first place to look? However, I don't want to throw money away unnecessarily. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!
Dave

2 questions. Why are you using a W58 with a 1JZ-GTE? The W58 isn't meant for boosted motors, especially a 1J. Also, have you heat shrinked your coil packs yet?

I am going to closely inspect the packs this weekend, and either epoxy or heat shrink them.

I drove the car a bunch last night, when it was cooler outside, and experienced the same problem. So the miss is boost-related, nothing to do with temperature.

As for the W58, Mk2 Supra guys have been using them with 7MGTEs etc. forever. THey hold up fine until a certain power level. I don't abuse it and never drop-clutch start the car. Besides, I have a spare W58 too, heh heh.

If I ever go single turbo I will find a R154 and the bellhousing.

Thanks

The epoxy will only work for fixing cracks. Heat shrinking them will give them extra insulation that they need. The MKII guys have been using W58's because they do not put that much power through the trannies due to a lack of power upgrades. Save yourself the hassle and get an R154, the bulletproof tranny.

THanks for the tips. I will report back after I heat shrink them.

I have been driving the car with the W58/1JZ at 10-11psi for a year and all is well. Like I said, I never drop-clutch start the car and try not to shift brutally.

But I'm assuming you plan on upgrading the motor, which means you will need a stronger tranny. When the tranny goes (and it will), get an R154. Let us know how it goes.

Adam

All in good time of course!

What sucks is that right when I was completing my swap there was a r154 with jz bellhousing on craigslist near Austin super cheap, I think $250 or so. By the time I called he was packing it up to ship it to the buyer.

Well, I fixed the problem using zip ties.

Turns out that I had a boost leak right at the "T" connection which runs to my boost gauge. I had not bothered to zip tie or clamp those connections - argh! So whenever the boost went much above 10psi most of it escaped and did not make its way to the boost gauge. So my boost gauge was reading "off" and was also very inconsistent.

Bottom line. When I thought I was boosting 12 or so and missing, I was really hitting fuel cut.

The car has been running perfectly at 13psi in 3rd/4th for two days now. Time for a BCC.

Thanks all for the helpful advice - I will still shrink wrap them coils!
