I have removed my gauge cluster about 20 times in the last week trying to fix little bugs for my inspection. My inspection was monday so I buttoned everything back up and screwed the dash back into place. As I drove to the shop I noticed my speedo wasn't working. I figured I didn't get the needle in the hole on the cluster side so I thought no big deal I can just pop it in after.

I went to look at it today and couldn't get the needle inside the cluster, it felt like there was a spring holding me back from putting it in. I finally took a light to see the needle, and somehow it had broken off. The needle was sitting inside the green piece on the dash side and caused the "springy" effect.

The speedo was working before, so I would think the rest of the cable is fine. I searched and found I can replace the needle with a metal crimp on one in the "help" section of the auto parts store. Can someone tell me the procedure I need to do in order to replace the plastic needle?

This is on a 87 7MGTE 5 spd

I think that maybe a pic or two of the issue might be helpful. I read it and I have a couple of extra auto speedo cables that I may be able to offer, but am afraid I still don't really understand the real problem.

might just be easier/better at this point to replace the whole dash since its plug and play. just an idea, ive never really had to fool with the speedo.

replace the whole dash? I don't get what you mean? The piece of the cable that is connected under the dash?

sorry about that, i thought your cable was still intact. i had meant replace the gauge cluster if you'd messed up something within the speedo box. i really dont know how it all works, but i thought that the gauge cluster pulled away from the cables and plugs, and they were interchangeable (pre and post 89, of course)

I don't want a whole new cable because mine works fine, the needle at the end is just broke off.
I will see if I can get the upper piece I suppose...
