on a 87 mk3, how does the boost gauge work?

it measures how much pressure is in the pipes after the turbo and before the engine. Then it shows you the amount of pressure in psi or lbs/in on a dial.

The boost sensor is on the driver side engine bay with a vac line on it. On the same bracket as the ignitor IIRC. Have a problem or just curious?

It is not on the ignitor, it is on the injector resistor.
Mine has a sticker that says "turbo pressure" on it with a PN, etc.
