BHG Question...

Yeah I know it's another one.

I'm going with the HKS 1.2mm MHG and ARP bolt n stud kit (straight from Titan motorsports) Now this engine is a brand new rebuild, the builder botched the torquing and the OE HG blew within 30miles.

The block is a brand new reman, and the head was just machined. Should I have them resurfaced anyway? The car NEVER overheated. It acted up once, parked it. Checked the oil and the oil had some cream in it and the radiator was pressurized.

I was thinking if I pulled the head off and everything was still spotless it wouldn't be an issue. What do you guys think?

If you get a MHG, your head and block have to be within RA spec. I doubt it is in spec with the stock HG you have on right now. Just my 2 cents.

So if I just went with a Felpro I would be better off in the long run?

Is it going to be a DD or a high hp supra? If your sticking mostly stock or even BPU, I'd use the felpro and arp head studs.

If its about 400 hp or lower, stick with OEM Felpro. If not, or if you want extreme piece of mind, pull it and get it in spec, and do a MHG

Personally I just did mine( see build thread) I would get the head check by a good machine shop just for peace of mind shouldn't cost much . After you do that might as well go with a MHG that way if you want to go big later it is one less thing to tackle

Alright, I went ahead and picked up the felpro. I'm mainly just looking to get it up as dd for the time being. Performance is in the future, but right now I need to get to work so I can pay my bills and buy the performance parts.


Another quick question. ARP Bolts or ARP Stud Kit? the stud kit is only like 20 bucks more. Which should I go with?

edit: I'll also mention that 2 of the exhaust side bolts were removed without a wrench, the other 5 exhaust side bolts were removed effortlessly with a ratchet. THe Intake side was still holding it's torque.

go with the studs and tighten them in steps they apply a more even torque than bolts also after using a stock style gasket you would have to resurface again before using a metal gasket

u can still use studs u put the head on then the washers then the studs get screwed in

That is VERY common, Bigaaron at drifmotion sells a DIY helicoil upgrade including larger studs for the exhaust side to prevent this from happening again.

Well we got the head off today and it is SPOTLESS. the exhaust side of the Number 3 Cylinder was blown on the gasket. We're puttin it all back together tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Although the block and head has been machined you will want to lap the block (at least I would) Be sure to check for any rivets that may be on the new gasket and in the way of the clamping surface. (it happens) Torque to 90-100 (mine is at 100) with ARP studs.
