My car has been running wierd for a while. Sometimes it will run great. Sometimes I'll feel a sudden loss of power. But I went to start it today, and it fires up, but immediately dies. I checked fuel, so I decided to open up the ecu. This is what I found. Is this what a blown circut or "cap" looks like? BTW This is a 1jz 88 supra

PM Bigaaron with those pics. They do the repair on the ecu's and I'm sure he would be able to tell you if it's a problem.

First you'll need to clean the board to make sure. sometimes is as simple as a bubble on your solder paste. May need to be re-soldered or the capasitor replaced.

I talked to him on the phone about it, he thinks the capacitor leaked. Hopefully this is the problem with the car, seems like it's worth a shot to send it to him for repair before doing hours of diagnostic work, or having it towed to a shop that knows nothing about 1j or 2j. I try to turn my own wrench whenever possible.

I had the same problem with mine But I just replaced the Caps and you would not beleive the difference. Mine just started doing it all of the sudden and from what I have heard they all do it eventually and it took me like 15 minutes to replace all five of them. Nice thing is once you replace them it seems to run better and I am so much happier.

Mine was doing this today or similar to it. First last night it would drop down to around 500 then jump back up but never died. Then today I started it up and it rev'd to like 1500 to 2200 rpms back and forth and I wasn't even touching the throttle. Know this is an old thread but saw you post the videos and made me think that it looked like mine. So I was worried and opened up the ECU and yep bad cap. So now it's either send off to get fixed or do it myself. My problem is how do I go about cleaning up that stuff on the PCB board.

you just scrape off the burnt part gently and make sure none of the tracing was damaged. If it wasnt just lesave it and solder in new caps. They can be found at electronics stores for around 1-2$.

This is after i got it back from Aaron at DM. He had left all the old capacitor gel on the board and just soldered on top of it. I had to do the job myself. When I asked for my money back he got angry and hung up. It must have been his time of the month.

I took this pic after I wiped the gel off....yes all he had to do was wipe it....like with a cloth...or a towel...

And this is how you properly prep/clean it!

LEXTECH Does a proper job of repairing bad capacitors in 2JZ ECU's. I have heard numerous complaints about the work on the ECU performed by DM. I do not have personal experience with this, but the consensus is to use LEXTECH and no, I do not have any affiliation with them. They are going to be repairing my MINES tuned 2JZ GTE ECU very shortly. Below is the link to the thread that discusses the issues.
