So I've googled a bit and understand I can use the auto ecu I currently have after splicing for the neutral bypass safety and reverse lights.

However would I need to do the splicing if I run a manual ecu on the auto harness? I found someone selling their manual ecu and its from a 91 mine's a 90.

I recently finished putting an R154 in my 87 NA. I cut the wiring harness off the old auto and spliced in the reverse light pigtail from the R154, and connected two other wires as the neutral start switch. I can't find the picture that someone posted here before. Then you disconnect the plug from the auto ECU under the passenger kick panel (this keeps the overdrive light from flashing). Super simple. No need for a "manual" ECU. The ECU should be NA and turbo. The auto has it's own ECU.

The reverse lights is not a problem.

You just need to by pass the neutral safety switch when switching from auto to manual.
