Auto To Manual conversion

I am converting my 91 Auto to a 5 Speed over the winter. My question is I am most likely getting a R154 out of an 88 (Kurt correct me if I am wrong). Now if I buy and 89+ ecu and wiring harness will it all plug in with the 91 motor and pre-89 tranny. Or are the 89+ and pre-89 trannys different.

Dont take m word... But I believe they are the same. You do not nessicarily need the Manual transmission ECU but when I did the swap Yellow 13 gave me a M/T ECU.

The trannys are the same. I used a r154 out of an '88 turbo to replace my '91 automatic. It wasn't that hard really. There is all kind of info on it. A couple of people even made like step by step picture instructions. I can't remember who it was, but I'm pretty sure I found them here. Good luck. Thanks guys. I think i remember reading in a post that they were the same but i just wanted to make sure. As for not needing a 5-speed ecu to convert the auto to 5-speed, I gathered that information from other posts but i would rather just have the ecu to go along with the tranny. Thanks for letting me know though.

Your ECU should work fine even though it's an auto. You can use an auto ECU for either auto or manual trannys but you can't use a manual ECU for an auto. Does that make sense?? Also, you're engine harness should work fine also since you already have a turbo and are only changing the tranny. You just won't use one of the connectors on your harness (the one that goes to the ECT part on the auto tranny). I think you may also have to splice in a couple of the wires for the reverse lights unless the connectors are the same (which they should be).

I hate to lose out on a sale but I don't really think you need the harness and ECU that I am selling. I think you are pretty much set the way you are right now.

You'll need the trans, shifter assy, shift boot, shift knob, flywheel, front half of DS, clutch assy (including a pilot bearing since autos don't have them), master/slave cyl, flex line, hard line, brake pedal and clutch pedal. Wiring harness and ECU are a plus

I have done the swap and have both ecu's. It works with either. Pm me and I will tell you how I wired mine up sp the cruise would work like it is supposed to (tap brake=cancel, tap clutch=cancel).

like they said, it really isn't that hard, just takes a little time.

Ohhh crap.. all of that.. man.. i just started trying to get my shit together for manual conversion.. flex lines? hard lines? no way am i gunna find them in new zealand very easily haha.

BTW im after a pedal box if any1 has one and willing to ship to new zealand? and possably even slave/master's aswell.. hell ill take anything manual conversion wise that isnt heavy or to big to ship .ie gearbox.

What i have atm is M-W series bellhousing (going to use a W box) flywheel, presure plate, clutch, clutch fork and pivot bearing.

Order an aftermarket SS braided soft line (eg http://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/pri...es-Flywheels/Clutch_Lines/part/Clear_Coating). Figure out which end attaches to your slave cylinder, and then take the master cylinder and the soft line to a good auto parts store. They should have generic metric hard lines in various lengths. Buy a long one with the correct male ends to fit into both the master and the soft line. Buy/rent the tool that allows you to reflare the hard line. Gently bend the hardline in a sensible path from the (now mounted) clutch master cylinder to a location where you can join it with the soft line. You'll probably have to cut the transmission-end of the hardline to the correct length, then reflare it with the tool.

Yes, as stated, the transmissions are the same. Auto ECU will control a 5spd, but not the other way around.
When are you buying that transmission? I could use the money like yesterday :icon_razz

You can use all braided line, I plan to. Simpler idea IMO than going hardline -> braided line. You can, however, go full hardline IF your eng/trans is solid mounted. That's an option too... Just put a coil in the hardline somewhere to absorb some vibration and you should be all set.

So do I understand that you can keep the auto ecu, buy a 5 speed harness, and complete the swap to R154 just fine? That's my situation for Sunday.

their like a ball bearing /maybe a roller bearin. but it's sealed..


the only diff i know between r154' is some didn't have abs' so you could have to swap parts maybe installed the sensor, or be skrewed.. and have no abs..

Im going to be using a W58 (R154 arnt common in new zealand) but my manual conversion didn't come with a bearing. is this something i will have to get from toyota or do most automotive parts places sell them? (places that sell oil filters and such)

Is it possable to connect the drive signal from the auto trans to enable cruise control?
