My mom has a 99 mercury sable v6 I think. It does this weird thing and sofar noone can figure it out. After you drive it for a while and it gets warm it starts to act up, its fine when cold. If your going say 45mph and come to a stoplight(full stop) and go to take off again and give it gas it wont go. The engine hesitates and has no power at all for a few seconds. After a few seconds it acts normal again. The engine makes some odd sound, to me it sounds like its not firing on all cylinders.

I dont know really how to describe it better as I never had a car act like it before. Shes taken it to some shops and they all just want to shotgun and replace random things not knowing if itll fix it or not. Noone can give a sure answer whats wrong but the problem is consistent.

Any ideas?

Check the coilpacks. Sounds weird, but my mom's sable was doing pretty much the same thing. It would also randomly lock and unlock the car while driving, and the alarm would go off whenever it damn well felt like (including 3am in the morning). Turns out one of the coilpacks had a hefty crack in it and was causing the WHOLE electrical system to freak out.

The clogged cat would cause no power all the time I would think? Not the few seconds of no power then runs fine.

Ill check the coilpack and see how it looks. I dont know if the plug wires have been changed recently thats something else Ive been thinking of. Theres no other electrical problems though at all.

Had a Buick with similar symptoms, no mechanic could fix it. Grandparents gave up on it and put it into storage, and then gave it to me. Got the problem fixed. Turns out it was a 99 cent fuel strainer located on the end of the in tank fuel pump. It had gotten clogged with bad gas over time. Hundreds of dollars in failed mechanics fees and it turns out to be a 99 cent part.

Ill check the fuel strainer and see whats going on with that.

Otherwise the car is pretty decent I think. My mom has had it for like 6 years now without anything major.
