is it bad to just have spent $188 on a new alternator from oreilley's? they also told me that they didnt have one listed for the 7m-gte. are they the same as the 7m-ge and are they universal?

i get $48 for my core charge though so its like $140 or so if u do the math... UGH! i was just going to purchase a turbo timer and a boost controller and i had to spend it on a new alternator... TALK ABOUT GAY!

Alternator is typically around 90 bucks. Assuming you had the most common type of failure you could've fixed it yourself for about 7. I still have the same one that came on the car. Cost me about $20 in parts to rebuild it.

Edit: I was asked in a PM for bearing numbers:

Front bearing: Koyo #333 or equivalent.

Rear bearing: Koyo #949100-279 or equivalent.

The front bearing is the one that's usually worn or dry. If not worn it can be repacked. Brushes or brush holders with brushes already installed can be had from Toyota as well as others. They can be easily changed without disassembling the alternator.

well, i installed it and its working so far. ill return the core and get $48 back so it'll end up being like $140 or so. not too bad i guess. it could be way worse and they did get it to me by today so i was able to take the supra out tonight!

cant beat a lifetime warranty either ;)

I shopped around a little bit and oreillys was the best price i could find. Usually napa has the better prices and they wanted 180 f'ing dollars plus core charges.

Advance Auto wanted about the same and it would be like a 3 week wait, forget that we took our chances at the boneyard. It's probably not as common anymore but usually there are starter/alternator type shops around that will rebuild your armatures and whatnot for cheap.

Toyota remanufactured alternator is the way to go. They may not be lifetime warranty, but I've had far more "lifetime warranty" alternators go on me than Toyota ones.

I'd rather have one that I can rely on, than one that may die at any second, but I get a free replacement.

Especially on like a 15 hour trip or something.

Maybe that's just me? :dunno:
