Alternator contact

The other night I noticed that my voltage was dropping while I was driving. Parked it and today i popped the hood and it seems like the contact on the alternator was burning. Has anyone seen of experienced anything like this before? I have a spare that I can put on now, but is it safe to do that?

The nut looks like its missing, or did you take it off?

Get the alternator rebuilt, there's a reason its smoked and I doubt its the portion of the stud you can see.

I took the nut off haha. So do you think the problem is just bc of the alternator itself, or a symptom of something more serious?

That's a poor looking stud and connector. at the very least you should take off that eyelet and clean the stud and eyelet very well. The cap could be discolored from a consistent spark if the eyelet and nut weren't making good contact.

It was loose when I took it off. I'll try cleaning it first and tightening it. Thanks guys

Ya it was arcing which is why you have the burn spot. Clean it and tighten the nut.

Ah, sure. 14V doesn't make for much of a spark, I suppose. Good call.

Depends on the available current. I've TIG welded using a car battery. Not the problem here though.

Just an update, I cleaned the terminal and tightened the nut. She runs smooth again. Thanks

if that came loose i'd jucj the nit on the back of the hidge bolt that connects to the block. I've seen those get loose.
