I couldn't find anything on search. I have to go take my alternator out by the side of the road cos it went bad yesterday. I was wondering what bolt sizes are on the alternator so I would know what wrenches to take. Mainly cos I don't wanna run all the way back home to grab anything else.

Take a 10mm, 12mm, 14mm and 15mm and you're set for MOST roadside wrenching.

Thanks CRE much appreciated.

The alternator required one 14mm socket and a 14mm wrench (one to hold a nut while you're unscrewing the bolt) along with a 12mm socket.

Just thought I'd put that up for anyone else that might search and not find anything.

Mine takes a 15mm wrench and a 14mm socket, but I've seen 2 14's before as well.

Thanks for posting your findings.

Someone changed the nut on yours CRE. Asian imports usually use 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, and 21mm's(if you carry these in your car, you can fix almost anything). The only time I find 13's and 15's is when someone(like me ;)) lost a nut or bolt, and raided the bolt bin. Domestics usually use 7, 8, 10, 13, 15, 18, and 21. Anything bigger I usually use a standard sized wrench/socket.

Yeah, my alternator nut is a replacement. ;) IIRC, there are some 15mm bolts on our cars... I can't remember for sure, but I'm thinking starter and something on or around the diff... then again I could just be tired. :)

Have yet to find a 13mm myself.

Good, that's one less Craftsman ratcheting wrenches I'll be buying! So are all the bolts on the starter 14, or am I just completely off these days?

CRE, you're off your rocker! ;) .... I watch too much British telly.

Anywho, IIRC my starter was all 14. Oh and I got two sets of ratcheting wrenches now, let me know if ya ever need to borrow one you don't yet have. One stubby set and one with flex heads. Christmas was good to me. :)

My positive battery was between a 12 and 13, so I'm sure it was a replacement bolt, but I was very confused when the 12 didn't fit. I thought I'd never need a 13. Turns out the 13 makes a good lazy-ass "close enough" wrench.

For shorties, I have the Duralast ratchet wrenches. Only thing I have from A.Z. that's over a year old and hasn't broke yet :) I had a set of the original "RatchetWrenches." I used them for 5 or 6 years before they started breaking(I used them everyday). They have a life time guarantee, you can warranty them at O'Rielly's, and are cheaper than the Craftsman.

There ya go, CRE. Same set I used, at a decent price.

As far as ratchet wrenches(and ratchets as well). The gears on the "Zero Degree" wrenches have fine(smaller) teeth(less turn to make it click), which makes them easier to strip. The RatchetWrench set uses a course(bigger) tooth design, which makes them more durable. Same thing applies to ratchets. Less turn to make it click means finer teeth on the gears. I've used the fine toothed 3/8" ratchet from Matco. I stripped it pretty quick. I prefer the normal ones.
