I think what Clip is trying to say is to have a variable inlet side to the turbine housing. Maybe thinking that (a smaller opening) would increase the exhaust gas velocity hitting the turbine wheel, thus creating faster spool-up at low RPM's. And then the inlet would open up at high rpms's to reduce back pressure. Sort of like an adjustable A/R.

Which is what the new Acura RDX has for its turbo.

look you guys are confusing things much here and should just stop posting in this thread because you will confuse other less informed people.

restricting the INLET of the turbo is bad. period.

if someone wants to write up a tech article about variable vain turbos then that is what should be done.

Dodge did VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbo) on the Daytona back in the 80s

Not new news, just haven't seen a VNT turbo that could actually breath BIG hp numbers.

A VNT style setup on the intake side, though? Wouldn't do really any good.

If you want quicker spool, look to the exhaust side - leave the compressor side alone, so it can do its job :)

Clip: Assuming you know turbos spool up using the exhaust pressure flowing thru to spin a turbine, connected to another turbine (the impeller) which speeds up the air giving it more pressure. Now, Acura has done something on the RDX turbo where the exhaust side has an apparatus that adjusts to direct more air to the center of the turbine under lower RPMs on acceleration to get it to spool up faster, which then opens as more exhaust volume is produced to make more power. This makes sense to restrict the size and direction of the exhaust opening, to get faster response times. But restricting the air on the impeller (clean air intake) side would only have negative effects.

What possible potential benefit could creating a restriction or vaccuum on the inlet side make?

It's not a question of it "not working" it's a question of "it doesn't make any fucking sense to start with"...

Now just what made you say what I was thinking but didnt want to say. Just use different wheels and a/rs and you kill any other failing possibilities from happening!

LOL! Now that is a COMPLETELY different story.

Here's what you are looking for:

http://www.supracentral.com/private/tf08/

It's pretty much an infinitely variable exhaust A/R. :)

It weighs in at about 60 lbs. At some point I'll be running this in a 7MGTE powered MKIII drag car. :)

For comparison's sake, here it is next to a CT-26:

I could swear Acura tried to do something like this on one of it's turbos or something similar.

They did. I've got it in a Tech article in one of my magazines somewhere. They were doing it with one of their new turbo Acura vehicles.

*edit*...Yep, you got it. :D
