i've searched the forum for info, found a few articles and read them. my a/c blows air, but it's not cold; the heat works though. i don't know what i have to replace/fix/recharge in order to get some cool a/c, is there a test i can do, or is there something specific to look for? oh and i don't want to try a 'death kit' either, lol. any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance :]

A common cause is old age. The seals and o-rings dry up, and the refridgerant leaks out.
That requiers replacement. But first it requires finding all the leaks. If you don't have the diagnostic tools, or information on how to use them, take it to an A/C qualified shop.

Do not listen to anyone that tries to tell you that the cans of A/C sealant will fix it right up. They usually last a season or 2 before a real problem costs you even more money. Usually when a seal leaks the freon out you have also lost at least 1/4 of the oil needed in the system. So even your "buddy" recharging it for you will lead to more damage.
Not trying to scare you away from any of this just trying to stress that where A/C repair is concerned, the cheap fix is usually the most expensive in the long run. Without vacuum pumps, recycling machines, UV lights and a proper set of manifold guages there isnt much you can do in the driveway.

Judging by your quote, it sounds like they condemned your compressor. You can save up the $1000 and let the shop complete the job with full parts and labor warranty or buy the parts to install yourself and let the shop finish the job. Most shops will do this stating no warraties. Some wont do it at all.
