You need the same harness and ECU as your body. In your case a 87-88.

so if i get the engine off a 89 i just need to get the 87-88 engine harness and ecu and change it from the grey plug?

Yup thats my understanding I'm actually in the same process right now. Only mine is a 92 long block so all the sensors from my pre 89 are gonna be used. You may have to change a thing or two on the engine to fit the older harness, I could never get a totally clear answer when I asked the same question.

You will need to change a few sensors - can't remember which ones sorry - but yes. get the 87-88 harness and ecu, it makes things SOOO much easier. I went through the same process - 1990 engine in an 86.5 :)
It is possible to keep the grey ecu & harness but you'll need to do a fair bit of splicing and maybe some custom wiring.
