89-92 climate control question

I have an '87 MKIII and just upgraded my silvery climate controller with one off a '91. After the hookup, I noticed it works different than my '87. I'll pose this question to those that have 89-92 cars and those 86.5-88 owners that have done the same swap over conversion:

89-92 owners: For those that have a 89-92 Supra with the stock climate controller, can you tell me if its normal when I switch the selector from vent to defrost, or floorboard or bi-level for it to automatically jump to the AUTO mode? The only way that I can bypass the AUTO mode is for me to hit whatever button a 2nd time and hold it in for maybe 2 seconds. It's as if the car is telling me that it really wants to work in the AUTO mode and to tell it to do otherwise, you have to say "HELLO, I AM THE DRIVER AND I WANT TO USE THE VENT, OR FLOOR OR DEFROST MODE."! Could it just be a worn unit where all the buttons are sticking? Or is this normal operation of this unit?

86.5 - 88 owners: For those of you that have swapped out your stock unit to the upgraded 89-92 climate controller, have you had any similar issues with the unit working correctly, that is besides the DEFROST/FLOOR selector as I understand will not work on these earlier cars?

when i had an 87, mine seemed to work fine... only thing is the defrost switch seemed to be broken. it just wasn't staying in. but defrost worked, i just had to play with it until the light stayd on

I don't believe mine does that. Though my A/C doesn't work so I don't pay much attention to it anyways.

I'll try to check when I drive it next

you're kidding, I haven't heard of people having this issue! How many of you guys have this sticky button issue?

I don't have those issues. 89+ CC in 88 supra. The only issue I have is that some of the buttons don't light up, or light up randomly.

iirc only issue I know is that the button for defrost/lower vent does not function with the 89+ climate controls when they are installed in pre89 cars.

I have the issue with my lights working intermitently for the temp up/down, but that is just an issue with my individual climate control having a loose connection somewhere.

I have the same problem with mine. Somethimes the LEDs don't work, and the button doesn't fully depress. It's the CC unit. Maybe you can take it apart and clean everything up? :dunno:

the buttons are a tough one, and not able to be replaced.

the LED's are easy as pie to fix (had a few blown ones in mine, was easy to fix)
