my differential is leaking oil on the front and one of the sides. I bought seals from Toyota. Is this a hard job? I looked at TSRM.. there are some SSTs mentioned.. have anyone done this without SSTs? I dont have a slide hammer.. is that required for the side seals ?

Removing the sides is not that difficult to do or to replace. You do have to remove the side output shaft with a slide hammer. I could not get one up in there so i removed the whole diff. Sure does make it easy to install a new fuel filter with the diff out.

The front seal is harder because you have to put a preload on the gear and that requires special tools and knowledge out of the trsm. If you remove the lsd you can attach a slide hammer easy and yank off the side shafts.

The trsm can tell you how to do this but it may be best to get a shop to do it. you can do the sides yourself. I replaced both sides as one was leaking but i did not mess with the front.

I attached a pic that shows the slide hammer and the shaft with hole. You can see the clip that holds the shaft in and requires a swift jerk but really not much force to remove. When the SH was used with the LSD in place there wasnt enough room. Be sure to jack up the lower suspension are to parrallel to the floor to remove the output drive shaft from the diff with the 6 nuts. Replacing the seal is easy and i used the SH to remove it.

It would be a good time for redline synth now too.
