Well It's time for a new motor. I came across a 87 7M-GTE with 68k for $400, or a 92 7M-GTE with 65k for $650.

My question is, how different are the motors? I own a 91, so I'm sure the 92 would bolt right up. If I wanted to save $250, is the 7MGTE out of an 87 going to plug right into my stock harness? If not, what's different? Should I just spend the other $250?

I have a couple days to make my decision.

Thanks,
-Mike

Under a damn Toyota
You will have to change the coolant temp sensor and the cold start timer switch on the therm. housing (diff connectors), but I think everything else should be the same or it was on mine. I used a 89 in a 87.

I put an 88 7mGTE in my 89 several years ago. The only thing I had to change was the harness. Everything went to where it should, all the sensors, had mega codes when I 1st started it...but was able to clear them eventually. The most common was the knock sensor but it was because the plug was not connected well. I think the only thing you may have to be concerned about is that the Harness should be Manual------->Manual or Automatic tranny---------> Automatic Tranny. That is the only reason I had to change my harness because the engine I had had an Automatic attached to it. My MKIII was Manual. After removing the harness from the engine I just attached the harness that was left in the car and all the plugs mated from what I rememeber. This was like 12 years ago.

Shit. Well. A friend has an 89+ he built from scratch, gonna grab that. Has aftermarket rods/pistons/etc. and he's done a great job on all his supras so this one shouldn't be any different. The car that this motor was in ran circles around MK4's all day, mine will too, just need supporting mods ;)

My motor is out now, btw, gonna post up a build thread once I feel I have enough pictures lol
