i was looking at the difference between the intercooler setups on a 1jz vs a 7mgte and i was wondering could you use a 1jz intercooler on a 7m? it has far less bends and it makes way more sense. also what are the major differences between the two motors? obviously 1jz's are really pricey but if im going to do a motor swap i want to know why i would need a 1jz besides the fact that they are rare and sought after.

thanks wilcox

Big ol' can o' worms...

A JZ is a newer block design. A bit less displacement, but high revving. Potentially easier access to parts because it's newer.

As far as intercooler setup, the biggest change is that the JZ has a front facing intake manifold. That will make the stock intercooler kind of pointless on a 7M (Unless you go with a FFIM.) The core itself isn't enough of an upgrade to be worthwhile.

A lot of people do JZ swaps because they have the opinion that JZs are problem free blocks, while the 7M is known for BHGs. Personally, I'm of the opinion that for the time/effort/money of a JZ swap, making a solid 7M isn't difficult.

ffim is front facing intake mainifold right? is there anythng that is keeping someone from drilling a hole or cutting the radiator support so you can just go down and across and straight back up with the piping? i feel like you loose so much boost in a traditional 7m piping design being that there are like 3 90 degree angle turns. what are the saftey or performance precautions that make it not smart to hack up the support for better piping design?

It doesn't take much hacking to put in an FMIC and route pipes across from the far side.
But what you gain in smoother turns/ transitions, you make up for in pipe length. I had an FFIC setup where the turbo feed went down then across the front of the car, just behind the IC. Then the return came up from the passenger side of the IC and went in through the filter's air feed hole, to go to the thottle body. Worked very well for years and years. But this time I'm going with same-side piping, using the DM kit.

By the way- DM has kits BOTH ways for the 7M. Your choice.
