What is that soft white metal stuff Toyota use that gets deep grooves in it?

Can it just be polished out?

stock cams are coated in babit (sp) same shit that crank and rod bearings are made from.....no it cant be "polished" but can be recoated for big bucks! most just roll with it anyway all scratched as our cam lube system kinda sucks!

If the babbit has transfered to the bearing surface in the head, yes, it can be cleaned off.

The coating on the cams can be taken off without any problems.
I use a fine wire wheel on a bench grinder.
It will remove the babbit, without hurting the base material.
I have never had a problem with cams that have had the babbit removed.
All reground cams such as Schnieder, and welded,
and reground cams have the babbit removed,
and I here no problems from people running them either.

Now if the damage is severe, to the point of the aluminum in the head is groved,
or the cast iron of the cam is groved a lot,
that is a whole different story........

No reason to remove it if its still there, you're just going to create more clearance etc. Even if its scratched it is only babbit, its soft, it doesn't need to be perfect.

True........
Pretend that you just didn't see it.

I have pulled the cams on a 50,000 mile engine,
and they were cut-up.
They probably were that way at 10,000.
And I have pulled 150,000 mile heads that looked the same way.......

Yeah.

I have 30,000km head with deep grooves in the white stuff and I picked up a spare head yesterday that is in very good condition and seems to have had all the white stuff polished out. Just wondering if a machine shop may have done this in a major head service?
