1jz oil filter block - can it be removed

sorry if this question has been asked many times before..

is it possible to unbolt the factory cast aluminium elbow oil block and hook up an aftermarket unit straight to the block???

some1 has told me u cant but couldnt explain why.. is their some form of pressure bypass valve or something within the factory unit?
