i asked a similar question in the 7mge section titled: 1990 N/A to Turbo swap Question , "lagged" you state the once the ecu and the engine harness are the same that minor splicing is needed to get the harnesses to work together ....in my case i have a 90N/A and i just purchased a 87 7MGTE...
Not doubting yours skills or patients do you think you could have missed or crossed a wire some how ... you say the ignition switch is different between the two can you specify on that ... so the real hold back on your car is the the fact that the engine harness isnt sending the right signals...
So according to these links I can just match up the different pin out and create my own jumper harness or cut the 87 female connector off the engine harness and tap in connectors off of a 90 harness thanks everyone for there input ... I feel better I wasn't the only one with the dilema SM has...

I am pretty sure the chrome grill on those just clip on a family member has a set on his 4runner and on a Chevy 2500 and the grills come off .. the out put is really good too they will blind on coming traffic:icon_razz
