i had the same problem with my car. when i used to drive my car hard i would occasionaly see smoke from the shifter boot it was cause the hose on the back of the head to the heater union was leaking.

I have the same problem with my car after i replaced my headgasket for me the ticking sound is coming from a few vavles that are loose so all i have to o is today im going in and measuring the clearances and putting in new shims for the buckets, then my problem shoud be solved.
