The 1JZ and 2JZ came out at almost the same time, so I'd say they were likely developed at the same time. As for why bother with the 1JZ, having an engine with a lower displacement that can make 50hp more (than the 7M) would be hot stuff in Japan, where displacement is definitely a concern for...
I'm going with displacement and the cost of getting a new engine design tested and approved for use in North America when a new model is coming in a couple of years, and no other model to put it in.
In Japan, the 1JZ was used in the Soarer, Chaser, Cresta, Supra, etc. What would they have sold...
Got about 450km on it so far, it's pretty cool. :)
Nicest features thus far are the entire smart key setup (including puddle lamps, etc.) and the Bluetooth Audio system. There are so many little things that are neat/cool all over the car though, it makes me happy.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to take many pics at all, and none before I put my winter wheels/tires on it. I really wanted to get a few pics of the car with the alloys, but whatever. I had so much stuff to get done on the first day of getting it, so I had no time, and it's winter outside...
Technically I've never owned a Supra, it's always belonged to my Dad. That being said, I've been "in the game" so to speak seriously since around '98-99'ish I think, though I was an "enthusiast" long before that.
I remember when my dad picked up his 86 MK2 from the dealership in like 90-91'ish...
I actually already have a Torsen with axles here, but I already got all of the information I need, so no need to do anything else for me. :)
As for what it's worth, I paid $100.00 for the one I've got. Bought it 2 months ago I think.
