There is a decent alternative - 1.5JZ. Just get a new 2JZ shortblock from Toyota and put it under that 1JZ head! I think a 2JZ would be better, though - can't easily get new 1JZ parts in the USA, and if you are wanting to push out some power, things are going to break.
