The bitrate doesnt just change when you put it on a disc, the copy on the disc, is the same as the copy on your hard drive. If your TV is 1080p and the copy is 720p, you're upscaling, so it might look a bit pants.

HD doesn't 'degrade' on a disc. I use Verbatim DL's and they're 100% fine. They're more scratch resistant than most, and the disc has a quality feel to it. The only tradeoff is the 2.4x burn speed, but if you're burning large clumps of data i wouldnt want to burn faster than 4x anyway.

I doubt the price would drop here, but it would be nice to pay £68 for a full tank instead of £72...
