Fun thing about gears, and how they work, is that even though my engine makes more power than yours, your car puts more torque to the pavement. If you swapped for the 3.73 diff from the later turbo cars, yours would seem rather sluggish compared. For an around town and track car, the 4.30 gear...

Check the diff fluid, gears that aren't properly lubricated rarely make pleasant noises... Might also be a wheel bearing, but I understand ours are quite durable, my money would be on the diff fluid being low and/or very much in need of changing.
