It stops the subframe from moving too far under load. It braces the subframe against the body to keep it from coming in contact with it.

Well, if the gauge does it regardless of whether or not it's hooked up to the sending unit, then it's more than likely the gauge. I'd find another known working gauge and drop it in. If it doesn't work, it'll only cost like $15 and you can probably sell it on ebay.

Just get a piece of Vinyl, about 1.5"x1.5" and apply it to the paint where you want the antenna to go. Then, stick the antenna over the "decal". No paint scratches, no worries. :bigthumb:
