It doesn't seem very likely that they would both "died" at the same time, but if that were the case, you should definitely read deeper into it than turbos as you may have an oil feed problem.
Then again, they are ct12a's, so take that for what it is, but I'd still want to look into it further...

If you want ultimate DD reliability then yes, you do want a 1JZ.
It's extremely time consuming, but the next lazy sunday you have, grab a medium sized zip-tie and cut the head off. Feed it through from the back and it'll straighten the bent ones out on it way through. That's how I did mine.
For a car that is 17+ years old, taillight gaskets and hatch weatherstrip is an easy purchase at the dealer that you probably should do. Believe it or not, the big hatch seal is only $65 or so depending upon local discounts and such.
Common misconception with intercoolers is they have to be all out in the air.
Even if you only have 1/3 or 1/2 of it showing it is still equally as efficient as one that's 100% out in the air.
