I think normally they use a vibrateing table or tool to knock the sand out. You coud use lost foam technique instead. That might be easier to work with.

BSG, if you had preimpregnated sand to use for the interior passages that could work. Otherwise I'd use the factory lower runners and cast just the upper main runner and attach the two. That might be more doable.
