am i the only one that doesn't really like this combination? how common is it?

i was driving my dads 2jzgte one day and then all of a sudden the steering got stiff. so i told him and he checked the power steering fluid, filled it up, and nothing. so then he got a new pump, put it in, and still nothing. the steering feels like there is no power steering at all. anyone know...
