The shaft is what the pulley is bolted to. Check the TSRM in the above sticky section. It will show you, and describe to you what tests to do. There are multiple write ups on modding the oil pump. I'm not a guru by any means, but I think I've read this is a common problem with the 7m's.
Update. The turbo is the reason my car is smoking. It still smokes even after I rebuilt the turbo. Not sure at this point if there is a crack in the center section I just didn't get back together quite right. I will tear the turbo down again this weekend to find out.

Yes, check your tps as well as every other connector to make sure they are plugged in. Does it die when you hit the gas? If so, I would check your maf. Also check vacuum lines, a vacuum leak will make it idle funny.
