Check the turbocharger lower hose. It is by the oil filter. The hose can come off or split at the turbocharger housing. Unless you know to check for it it's hard to find.
Because these are prone to problems I fixed mine by doing just what you asked about. I cut the connector out and soldered the wires together; wrapped them individually and as a bundle. I haven't had a problem since. I can still get the CPS out and on top of the engine if needed. No more random...

Thanks that was a big help. Just knowing it was necessary made me look closer and I found the plug way up under the igniter. I had looked "everywhere for it" to the point I figured it had been removed.

89 MKIII 7MGTE- by the strut mount on the drivers side is the solenoid resistor. What does it do and is it necessary? I bought a car already modified and have rebuilt the engine. It appears whatever the solenoid resistor was connected to has been removed.
