Maybe I'm missing something here, but I can't see how to keep air from flowing through the head and out the exhaust. Is there zero intake/exhaust valve overlap on a 7MGTE? If throttle valve is closed to prevent blow-through the head, then you don't get to test for leaks at your intake...

Nobody has mentioned the possibility of a loose waterpump belt or other cause of slippage. Easy to check!
