In addition to the NVH issues ,solid SubFrame bushings could result in chassis damage(s) and other complications . I personally never found any need to run anything more than nylon subFrame isolators ,and IIRC the other Road Racing competition supra on this forum ( SupraGuru's) still uses rubber...
For Competition ,the factory MA70 teams had 3 basic bars to choose from: 25mm ,31mm and 32mm. Additionally for some tracks and conditions ,the stiffens of the bars was dynamically controlled by the driver with variance between 20mm and 40mm.
All parts used in this build are now officially available for sale ,some can be seen in the Stalx Supra PartOut Thread -http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?175445-STALX-Supra-Partout-Brembo-BBK-Cusco-LSD-SSR-Wheels-PWR-and-much-more!
A little more precisely - braces were added due to issues that the factory racing teams were having with the subframes in the Turbo A model and then propagated in all production MA70s - first officially homologation in he JAF book as "Reinforced Suspension Member" on Nov of 1988 with a picture...
Jose ,Aluminium cages were forbidden after the end of the Group A when FIA changed Apendix J of their regulations. In 1988 when the car was reBuild for DTM , Toyota had already homologated a few Aluminum cages (AL CUMG1) ,I've just checked and the cage that I see in the MA70 N/A homologation...
This shot of Bemani engine compartment represents their DTM configuration ,with a VO cage of 88 made of AL CUMG1 (weight of 22KG). The additional reinforcement bar from the front sub-frame would've been rendered illegal for many FIA events ,but was ok for DTM. Cage was designed for stiffens and...
I see:) I was never able to find too much info related to the Ma70 Group A program in Australia - from the little that I know... after TRD realized that they can't beat the laws of physics and ever be competitive with the evolution Supra in JGTC they send 2 or 3 race cars to AUS ,factory...
Don't really remember too many power steering failures ,or these were hard to spot around the piston holes and BHG issues that the factory race MA70 had until their last race at SPA in 1990;)
It is also true that on this forums John Smith did mention that his race supra had a lot of failures...
Wrong - Toyota Did:) IIRC there are two types of dePowered racks that were available back in the days 15.5:1 and 16.5:1 ,the powered rack was 14.5:1. Many TTA and Private N/A Race Supras from the GroupA era used them and at least one that was later converted to turbo for hill climbs still have...
Wonder if Turbo A Supras still exits that are derivable ,probably not ... as a result of the fact that FIA had no way of checking ,pretty much all manufacturers were inflating the number of vehicles produced when it come to Homologation (evolution) models. I'm sure that Toyota made a lot less...
Tubular options - for MA70? Highly unlikely ,not even in Group A where IIRC the subframes were locked to be OEM only. You can always use Aluminum-alloys SC300 front SubFrame ,but this will require some creativity and engineering to be installed. Why would you need tubular anyways?
Catastrophe(s) are part of the modification game:) I found that HeimJoints on the MK3 suspension setup are not as bad as many other cars not only because on the hub end most of the arms connect with GrandTouring spec OEM bushings ,but also because there is a second layer of bushings between the...
Unfortunately the RAS car was sold to a private collector in UK and he probably won't be too cooperative in showing you the car:) ,but you are in luck - one of the Bemani cars if for sale for a very low price of $50 000 EU ... you can always see it ,just take a plain to Switzerland ;)...
Heavy ... only when stock. The drift car is more than likely under 3000lbs ,and the RAS supra from the pic above (recently sold at an aucition for $45 000) is under 2400lbs! ;)
That is correct ,and your cage is not Roll-Over safe for LHD car. Very few cars were implemented with one diagonal cross bar (mostly hill climb ,and R.A.S. car from the picture above) ,this cage design was IIRC TypeC from the FIA/JAS papers for MA70 but depending on the RHD or LHD the bars were...
Also some footage from GroupA races in Europe - the only video that I've ever seen of the Fastest MA70 ever build - Bemani Toyota Supra ,private car that was faster than the Factory TOM's cars!
24 Hour Race 1988:
Jump to 6:55
Jump to 4:00
Jump to 2:24
Here is another old vid from 1987 ,two Minolta TOM's MA70 in 1987 Fuji InterTEC 500 Race.
Interesting part is at 1:40 when on the first lap TOM's Supra #36 was out outdraged on the straightway by a Nissan Skyline (TOM's were still limited to 100% stock CT26 and the cars were very weak). As a...
