I have Pirelli P-Zero on the back and Michelin Pilots on the front. Very happy with the ride, the handling and wear of both so far. I've only put about 10k on them though.

Shitty wiring and/or component is usually to blame for issues people have with the AEM. It's not nearly so forgiving as the stock box.
