Now that Spring break is here, and I have some time, I've decided to post my first build thread. I've been on SM for a few years now, and the network is great, just met a few inspiring local SM members Nate, Ron, Tom, Duane, and a few others here in WA...

First off, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Josh and I am a student at the University of Washington. So, yes, of course this will be a budget build :3d_frown: I'm 20 and have been a gear head for most of my life. I've owned only Supras and 300zx's too many to count, but for now I have a z32, a couple Ma70's, and my first Honda! don't worry, its an '82 Nighthawk cb650! I like to drag and drift, and go on organized drives.

I've done numerous swaps and builds, nitrous, NA-Ts, worked with a wide range of cars, from Euros to Domestics but...

This will be my first 1J/MA70 and my first 7M/MK2 so I could use all the help I can get :1zhelp:

I guess I'll start by adding a parts list that I have gathered thus far (ascending according to time of purchase)...

The MA70
1988 5spd NA

Got her locally from a person on craigslist for 500 without a motor. Maroon leather interior. Pretty clean for the price, no major dents or dings - average condition for a 20 year old Washington car. I found a donor 1987 Turbo Supra and swapped the JDM motor, tranny, driveline, Differential, etc. ran great. Minor upgrades, FMIC, intake, exhaust. Was running 12 psi before I pulled her, never dynoed but im guessing around 300whp. I love 7Ms but its going into my buddies MK2 and Its time for something new.

No current pictures of the Mk3 but here are some older pictures of her.

The MK3 is on hold for now until I get the MK2 out of the way. The motor is coming from my MA70 (up above) and I'm doing the swap for my coworker.

So far, the motor has been prepped and dropped into place. All that's really left is wiring  plumbing, driveline and exhaust.

Dipstick relocated. used a cobalt bit and sealed with a little jbweld stick. capped the old dipstick location with a long bolt and nut. i welded the threads of the bolt so we dont have any accidents:naughty:

A little eerie seeing a 7m in here.. but ya, basically got everything done and ready to be finished - added the oil return line for the oil cooler, clocked the oil filter housing, relocated dipstick, and pickup, 5m motor mounts, 5m oil pan, 5m fuel fliter, w58, clutch...thats it for now..

Well, I'm a little stuck on the Mk2 at the moment, the amount of time I during my break was very minimal. Everything is routed and finished except for the fuel line to the engine. I left that out to purge the tank and to see if the pump still works----- and what do you know, it doesnt work. For some reason, the pump is not pumping gas when put to the on position.

I rewired the fuel pump according to Andy's MK2 Wiring + the jumper bypass near the old MAF connector and still not working. I'm trying to get the stock Mk2 pump to work, but it not happening. This weekend, I'll be swapping it out for the working Mk3 pump. hopefully that will solve the problem. If not, I'm going to have to figure something out with the wiring. The whole car's wiring is a mess, theres bad stereo wiring, bad alarm wiring, and missing heater blower motor, and missing relays left and right - luckily we have another donor car, so hopefully i found everything that was missing.

Well here are some pictures of the semi-finished product.

So the Mk2 is finally running! but theres a really high idle issue. that wasnt present before removal from the MK3.

So, I got her running by bypassing the fuel pump and running 12V constant to it at turn on. I was going to replace the fuel pump, but realized its an external pump (1983). Once I bypassed it, the car started right up, but one really big problem,

The idle is extremely high. I dont have a tach adapter yet, but I know that its way over 2k rpm. I checked the ISCV and even replaced it with a newer one, and still idles high. Throttle cables work properly, same with cruise control. No sticking. Car idled perfectly in the MA70 before swapping into the MA61.

Is there a possibility that, running 12v to the stock external fuel pump is putting too much pressure at the regulator causing a high idle? Att idle it smells extremely rich, gets all over your clothing etc.

I know that the stock mkII pump runs off the MAF and increases with engine speed? Since its an '83 with an external pump, would Andy's wiring write up not complete for this car?

HELPPPP!!!!

Andy's write up is not complete for an 82-83 car.

there were some thing's i could not find and some of the layout screwed with me.

i just bought an EWD from Toyota and started working the wiring out my self.

I'm going to say it's doing a high idle to help warm up the car 1500rpm is fine!

though 2k, that would mean you probably have a vacuum leak or two.

hit me up if you wish.

would like to see your mkii make it to the Centralia meet this year too.

So, I finally found the time to start the 1J this weekend. I'm just really tired, got her finished in 3 days, my fastest swap thus far and most rewarding. :naughty:

I started working on her Saturday evening, finished this morning... How? did I do that? Let's just say, sleep wasn't a priority... I decided to stay Twins for now, because I couldn't find lines, and exhaust in time... :nono: but I'll take it one step at a time.

Saturday
- Prepped the motor and engine bay
- Removed A/C, and other unnecessary weight
- Drilled 2" hole through speedo
- Removed Interior dash
- Dropped in the Motor/Tranny
- Routed Engine wire harness
- Started on Wiring!!!

Sunday
- Put on Coil Overs
- Installed driveline
- exhaust
- Fuel lines
- Various wires, plumbing
- Swapped to 5 spoke wheels

Monday night - Tuesday Morning
- Finished wiring body harnesses
- Reinstalled dash and interior
- Put on bigger FMIC
- Rerouted IC piping
- Installed Raditor
- Installed pwr str cooler and various plumbing
- Installed Electric Fan

Once everything was complete (fluids, etc), I installed a battery and put the ignition to the On position and then checkd to see any shorts, hot relays, wiring, etc. Fuel pump was on :icon_bigg

I then went to start the car, and AMAZINGLY it starts on one crank!!!:love:Sounded great, well takes some getting used to... :biglaugh: ( i like how the 7m sounded.

No smoke, no noises, no ticks, i am so lucky... to have found a smooth motor.

All thats left
- need new clutch slave cylinder
- need to wire in electric fan
- put on the hood, and we get to TEST DRIVE!!! CANT WAIT!:biglaugh:

I'll have more details later, I'm just dead tired now... Ecstatic! but tired. Let me know if anyone has questions...

I'll post pics in a few...

3 day 1j swap. much respect. How long did the mk2 7m swap take you? My friend's 7m has been sitting in my garage for a month waiting just to be dropped in.

I finished the 7mk2 over a couple of weekends, the car was incomplete inside and out, I was chasing relays, and wires that were missing. :3d_frown:
Learned my lesson though... never mess with an unfinished/stripped car, especially if you don't know where everything goes.
