Reposting this, first post was deleted soon after "clock problem"

Looking for anyone who has imported a car to the US from overseas.

What did you have to do to get the car into the country?
How much did it cost to ship?
Didi you have to change anything over to US spec?
What did you have to do to register the car?

There are lots of nice MK3's overseas, and any info on how to get one into the country would be great!

Mine is not imported from overseas, but I have friends that have done this. Makes it easy, because there is a place down the road that ALL they sell is imported supras, skylines, 300zx and MR2's. Here in CANADA, to have these people import you a vehicle from Japan, you will end up paying 10-12 grand for it, depending. All of the vehicles have extremely low mileage on them. My friend got his '92 MR2 with 20K miles on it. Completely mint condition, I believe he paid 13 grand for it, still amazing deal considering its basically brand new. You just gotta find the right people with the right connections to forward a deal like this and import a car overseas to North America.

You could always just buy one from Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, etc etc, they already went through all the trouble for you. You can even buy them used at discounted prices.

What I was really looking for was info relating to importing a car (Supra) from Europe or Japan, directly into the US. I know Canada has much more relaxed rules for importing a car, but that means nothing to me here in the US. I know that someone has some info for me??

it has to meet DOT crash test regulations and have anything required by the DOT up until the production year. it must meet EPA emission standards for the year of production. All work must be done by a registered importer. From there you just get your VIN number, then you have to meet local and state laws, obviously.

I believe you can bring the cars from imported Canada to the US, but only on a temporary basis. I think if you're say, going to school in the US, while having a Canadian address, you can bring the car down for up to 6 months.

Frequently asked questions on the motorex web page.

ARE THE SKYLINES DETUNED ONCE IN THE UNITED STATES?
NO, THE SKYLINES WE BRING IN ARE NOT DETUNED.
ARE THE SKYLINES CONVERTED TO LEFT HAND DRIVE ONCE IN THE UNITED STATES?
ALL SKYLINES ARE KEPT RIGHT HAND DRIVE.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE CONVERSION PRICE?
WHEN WE DO OUR CONVERSIONS, WE HANDLE ALL OF THE PAPERWORK, DOT, AND EPA. ALSO, ONCE THECONVERSION IS COMPLETE WE GIVE YOU ALLOF THE FORMS YOU NEED TO REGISTER YOUR VEHICLE.
IS THE CONVERSION IS LEGAL IN ALL 50 STATE LEGAL?
YES, WE MEET FEDERAL STANDARDS.
HOW DO WE INSURE A SKYLINE?
MOST MAJOR COMPANIES ARE ABLE TO INSURE THE SKYLINE. MOST ARE INSURED AS GRAY MARKET CARS OR EXOTIC VEHICLES. OF COURSE RATES DEPAND ON MANY FACTORS.
DOES MOTOREX IMPORT ANY OTHER VEHICLES BESIDE THE SKYLINE?
MOTOREX, ONLY IMPORTS THE NISSAN SKYLINE.MOTOREX, HAS NO PLANS TO IMPORT ANY OTHER VEHICLE.
ARE THERE ANY EXTRA CHARGES BESIDE THE CONVERSION FEE?
FOR THE MOST PART THERE ARE EXTRA CHARGES. BONDS, SHIPPING, AND ANY OTHER FEES WILL BE ADDED TO THE TOTAL BILL. OWNERS ARE ALWAYS NOTIFIED OF ANY EXTRA CHARGES AS THEY ARISE.
DOES MOTOREX IMPORT ANY SEDAN SKYLINES ?
WE DO NOT IMPORT ANY SEDANS DUE TO DIFFERENT DOT STANDARDS.
DOES MOTOREX OFFER INHOUSE LOANS?
NO, MOTOREX HAS NO INHOUSE LOAN PROGRAM. WE CAN DIRECT YOU TO BANKS AND LOAN AGENCIES IF NEEDED.
HOW LONG DOES THE CONVERSION PROCESS TAKE?
ON AVERAGE THE CONVERSION PROCESS TAKES 3-4 MONTHS.
IS THERE A WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLES?
NO, THERE IS NO WARRANTY. BUT WE DO STAND BEHIND EACH AND EVERY CAR WE IMPORT. MEANING THE CAR IS COMPLETELY LOOKED OVER AND TESTED TO ENSURE OUR CUSTOMERS ARE GETTING THE BEST POSSIBLE SKYLINE.
WHERE DOES MOTOREX GET THEIR CARS?
JAPAN. WE BUY OUR CARS AT 1 OF 3 USED NISSAN DEALERSHIPS. WE NEVER BUY SKYLINES FROM ANY PRIVATE PARTIES.
CAN I SPECIAL ORDER A SKYLINE? AND HOW DO SPECIAL ORDERS WORK?
WE HAVE AN AGENT IN JAPAN WHO DOES OUR FIELD WORK. HE IS THERE TO FIND THE COLOR, MODEL AND OPTIONS YOU WISH FOR. THERE ISA $500 FINDERS FEE WHICH IN TURN LETS US ACT ON YOUR BEHALF TO FIND YOUR DREAM CAR. THE $500 DOES GO TOWARD THE VALUE OF THE CAR ONCE THE CAR IS BROUGHT OVER.
HOW ARE PAYMENTS DONE?
50% OF THE TOTAL VEHICLE COST IS DUE UPFRONT AND THE BALANCE IS DUE UPON COMPLETION OF THE CONVERSION PROCESS.
IS MOTOREX ABLE TO IMPORT SKYLINES TO CANADA?
NO, CANADA HAS DIFFERENT STANDARDS. SORRY BUT NO PLANS IN THE FUTURE FOR MOTOREX TO MEET CANADA'S STANDARDS.

ALL CARS BROUGHT IN BY MOTOREX HAVE THE CONTRACT DONE BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE UNITED STATES. WE ARE ON THEIR BILL OF LAIDING AS THEIR REGISTERED IMPORTERS. ALL MOTOREX CARS MUST BE PICKED UP AT SEA PORT BY US UNLESS OTHER WISE NOTED. WE ARE THE ONLY REGISTED IMPORTER FOR THE NISSAN SKYLINE AND ONLY THE NISSAN SKYLINE.
CAN I BRING A SKYLINE OVER AND JUST HAVE IT IMPORTED BY MOTOREX AND NOT DO THE CONVERION PROCESS?
AS REGISTERED IMPORTERS FOR THE NISSAN SKYLINE, MOTOREX BY LAW MUST DO ALL OF THE CONVERSION WORK ANY ON ALL SKYLINES IMPORTED BY US.
WHY DON'T YOU IMPORT THE 89' NISSAN SKYLINE?
WE DO NOT IMPORT THE 89' NISSAN SKYLINE DUE TO A DIFFERENT ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN THIS MODEL.
HOW COME YOUR NOT IMPORTING THE R34 SKYLINE?
WE ARE UNABLE TO IMPORT THE R34 SKYLINE AT THIS TIME DUE TO PROGRAMING ISSUES. WE ARE PLANING TO RE-RELEASE THE R34 SOMETIME IN LATE 2004.
CAN MOTOREX IMPORT ANY OTHER VEHICLES?
NO, EACH CAR IS BUILT DIFFERENT AND HAS DIFFERNT EPA STANDARDS AND THE PAPERWORK IS ALSO DONE DIFFERENTLY. EVEN IF THE SAME MODEL IS AVAILABLE IN JAPAN IT BUILT DIFFERNT, IT HAS OTHER EPA LEVELS NOT MATCHED HERE IN THE STATES. ALSO THE U.S. DOES NOT RECONGIZE ANY OTHER COUNTRIES CRASH TEST, SO A CRASH TEST MUST BE DONE TO EACH MODEL HERE IN THE STATES BEFORE IT CAN BE SOLD OR IMPORTED FOR ROAD USE.
IF I GET A SKYLINE THROUGH MOTOREX WHATS INCLUDED?
IF YOU ORDER A SKYLINE THOUGH US THE PRICE ALSO REFLECTS DOT, EPA AND THE PAPERWORK ON THAT VEHICLE. ANY OTHER EXTRAS SUCH AS SHIPPING AND AFTERMARKET PRODUCTS WILL ALSO BE ADDED ONTO THE FINAL PRICE. WE ALSO STAND BEHIND A EACH SKYLINE, MEANING THE CARS BEEN TESTED TO MAKE SURE IT RUNS WELL AND EVERTHING RUNS AS IT SHOULD.

I've heard 2 different things; One, he went bankrupt or some crap. Two, the more believable story, he had only had crash test results on the R32, and was selling the R33 without having crash test results on it, so he got shut down.
