heres what happens, in first, second, third and fifth (NOT FOURTH) i have a loud knocking sound. it just started today out of no where.

while in neutral and stopped i can hear the knocking sound though it is not as loud, when i depress the clutch i can hear the sound slow down and come to a stop.

i was thinking it might be the TO bearing but the last time i had one make noise the sound would stop immediatly after depressing the clutch pedal and made little noise while in gear.

any help is appreciated!

I had this problem with my R154. Take the tranny off and have a look inside. With mine, my flywheel bolts were too long, and they all came loose and it sounded like rodknock, but it was so violent. To find out if you have the same problems as me, take off your main clutch housing cover, and see if you can wiggle the flywheel.

Most likely the bearing between the input shaft an main shaft. There is a small cylintrical roller bearing in there. That bearing is work in every gear except 4th. While in 4th gear, the 3rd / 4th gear clutch hub sleeve is interlocking the input shaft and main shaft hence the reason that the noise stops. Along with that, I'd assume that the input shaft main bearing is gone also and the knocking is comming from the miss alignment of the input shaft gear and the and counter shaft gear.

Btw, that bearing gets noisy with age also. Very common on most RWD tranny's. That design is also the common reason for input shaft failure on hi power cars. Ford / Tremic realized that several years ago and redesigned it to accept a tapered roller bearing. The 93 Cobra T-5 was the first to use and all new tremic tranny's (most of them of them anyways) use it and is part of the overall reason why they are so stonge.

over power, and lack of lubrication. Its a bad design. Most manufactures pack it with grease, but its not sealed and gear oil washes it out and is not thick enough to support the bearing (no pressure like engine bearings).

I actually moddified one on an RX-7 tranny (same design) to use a seal and also filled the holes that were drilled for lubrication on the shaft. Packed with grease and sealed should have helped, but the car was only driven for about 15,000 miles after rebuild before being totaled so never really got to find out if it made any differance really. First 15,000 were great.

it wont last long. stop driving the car or else you WILL get stranded. i had to have the car towed when the thing failed on me.

my solution was to simply get another w58 cheap and i changed it in a few hours at the shop.

ive since sold the car however. im sure its holding up fine.
