so you mean it'll be off right?
you see, 'cus i just put a w58 in my turbo car and the speedo was pretty off. i think it was off by like thirty miles an hour at seventy on the highway, haha. and then one day i just stopped working all together, but that's a whole 'nother problem i can't figure out.

I must not have been clear. Here is what is going on:

chassis is 87 N/A which means 4.30 gears in back

The tranny that is going in is R154, that never had 4.30 gears and is the wrong speedo gear

I am asking if the speedo gear from the W58 is a direct swap for the R154.

No it won't (or at least shouldn't) fit. The N/A's speedo drive gear is a larger diameter then the R154's. You may be able to force it in and it may work for a little while, but I wouldn't expect to handle the stress for long.

On a side note (just incase someone searches for this info) the drive gear from a R154 will definitely NOT work in the W58... it won't even move.

Thats interesting. My car came as an auto I swapped in the w58 and then I went r154 and i did not have an issue. Well actually the lower cable broke and then I about an r154 cable (the whole thing) and I used on my w58 and when it died I bolted up the r154 and my speedo works just fine........

Did you swap the speedo gear each time or not? Sure, the speedo will move if you put a R154 in a N/A and leave the N/A diff.... but the speedo and odometer will be off by about 10%. The problem is that you can't use the W58's speedo drive gear in the R154 to make it right either.

The only thing i swapped was tranny's everything else has been the same. I even bought another speedo cable and it worked with both tranny's

Well, its looks like the gears are swap-able when the tranny is in the car, so I am not going to worry about it right now.

thanks for the help guys :)

The speedo drive gears are not interchangeable. From the sound of it, Mr. Bounty's speedo is just off because he left the speedo drive gears in their respective transmissions.

I've got two speedo drive gears for a R154 with a 3.93 LSD sitting in my closet... want to know why they aren't in my transmission? They DON'T work in the W58.
