Ive been having this problem with my 87 n/a automatic and I have been searching for a solution for a while. I got no codes, and have changed the transmission filter, as well as the transmission fluid.

When I have the car in D befor or after its warmed up I can floor it and it will go through 1st pretty quick then it goes straight to 3rd gear and so on. If I manually put it in 2 then to D after it goes through second the tranny works perfectly.

Toyota (they checked out the whole vehicle)said the Line Pressure Cable needed to be replaced. So I went ahead and purchased a new one and installed it. Still nothing.

I went ahead and adjusted all the cables on the throttle body still no luck. Checked the connections to the transmission and nothing. Im about to go get an ohm meter to test solenoids and the TPS sensor. I have been doing alot of searching but so far no luck. Im hoping someone has delt with this befor or can point me in the right direction. Thanks

Also some more things to note. When driving and trying to keep a steady speed the rpms seem to pulse very slightly and its almost not noticeable. This happens infrequently though but I thought it was worth mentioning.

And your cable is adjusted correctly? The cable only changes shift quality, not time. ECU failure is very rare, unless you are a 1JZ person. They trash everything.

Yes cable is adjusted per the Toyota online manual thing (0-1mm from the end of the orange boot to the wire stopper). I got a link to it from searching cant remember the site, you really think the ECU could be at fault?

Im about to buy a new tps tomorrow and the ecu might be an issue the targa has been leaking so moisture could have got down that way. Also will check out that link tomorrow (actually today).

Why are you buying a new TPS, when you haven't tested anything but the cable? Whether or not you need one, do the basic tests first.

There is a default of the solenoids. You are going to it when it warms. Do the test after it warms. Then the basic checks shown in the repair manual.

Well its fixed now.. Heres what I did besides the new trans filter and flushing it with new fluid.

Flushed and drained out the nasty green coolant and replaced with that piss yellow shit (g-05 or something) so now its fresh and clean. I think this had a big factor as the shit that came out after flushing was disturbing.

New Oil

New 02 sensor

took off the valve covers and retorque headbolts and resealed up up like new

Cleaned oil out of sparkplug valley and got new plugs

went through and cleaned up and recovered alot of wiring and a few sensors (egr) not to mention redoing cables that were corroded or just plain fucked up

Oh and ditched the nasty K&N for a regular cheapy from NAPA

My original intent for this was to pass emissions but it actually made my transmission problem go away. Fuck yeah! Still failed cruise emissions though, damn.

Nice to see maintenance done on the car. Your problem will be back, unless you did something to the car and don't know it. None of those things affect the default of the solenoids. Then again, I haven't seen your car, and dont' know that you had a problem.

The "shit" as you call it, is actually good coolant. But everything needs maintenance. Jetjock has a thread about his coolant filter. Look it up.
