Recently I've been hearing a "ticking" sound coming from what seems to be under the drivers side of the motor. When I hit around 3k RPM it gets louder as the RPM's increase. I'm assuming its the valves, but I searched on google and there was also a mentioning of the exhaust and how that might have something to do with the ticking sound. I also saw a small spot of oil when I was at starbucks, I'm going to check after making this thread to see if there is a spot of oil.

And to my other questions:

What is "valve tick"?
How is it caused?
What can be done to fix/cure it?

TIA.

1ZZ always seem to have valve tick as they wear in and get older, at least in my experience. My dad has an 00 corolla and my sister has an 01 prizm (same powertrains etc), they do it more cold, but not so much warm.
Im not sure what kind of valvetrain they have, but my guess is a screw and locknut. I would like to find out and make some adjustments.
If its coming from the bottom of the engine (stethoscope to oilpan would tell if it's in the bottom end) then its not good. On really cold mornings my sisters car knocks because the previous owner didn't take care of it well.
Just my experiences...

Oh yeah, and what Mike said.

Update:::

It turns out it IS the lifters/vavles, i told my parents that they should bring it to the dealer ASAP and get it fixed otherwise itll be fucked.

I'll let you know on thier decision, in fact, I don't even want to drive it tomorrow.

UPDATE #2:

They just told me to drive it tomorrow, but I dont think its such a great idea to be driving around with ticking valves. My dad said it's because "i race" the engine..."flooring" it in other words, but I don't see why that would cause the valves to do that. I'm sure there are hundreds if not thousands of 1zz motors who floor it all the time, they don't seem to be getting the same problems I's getting with this one.

he doesn't know anything about engines...

it's normal wear and tear for the valves to go out of adjustment on rocker style engines. It won't really do any real harm, just be really annoying...
