Temp sensor?

ok, my temp gauge went out. I think I have narrowed the problem down to a sensor that is located around the side of the termostat. The wire to that sensor is broken off. First of all, what is that sensor actually called, and secondly if I replace it how do I deal with the fact that the wire is just broken off?
I attachet a picture incase I haven't explained the part I'm talking about well enough.

The bottom sensor on the water neck and not the (dome shaped) thermo housing correct? The one marked coolant gauge sensor in this pic:



If that's it, all it does is provide input to the gauge...just replace the connector and hook it back up.
