Starting Issues

So I got everything back on the car after doing a a rod knock rebuild. I rolled the car out of my garage into the driveway, go to start it up...nothing. I turn the ignition and hear a click shortly after i turn the key. I assume this is the starter relay? Then nothing else happens. If it keeps clicking but nothing happens that means its the starter right? And if nothing happens at all it could be the solenoid? The starter worked finr before i did teh rebuild and I didn't take it apart or anything. I've made sure it wasn't the battery by trying to start it while attached to my car (shitty terminals) and my mom's newer car. It still didn't work. I think it's wired up correctly. I attached the battery directly to the starter and then attached the connector from the wiring harness up to the connector on the starter. Is this connector a ground that attaches to the relay or am i missing something. That connector seemed in bad shape too so i replaced it but that didn't fix anything. Anyway I went home from school last weekend to get the car running only to be disappointed by this whole situation. The car is now back in the garage awaiting my next trip home. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just a click and nothing? I would make sure the wires going to the starter are perfect and the terminal end on the battery are clean. Then try it.
Second thing to try would measure the voltage of the battery while trying to start. if the voltage drops really low say 8 volt and takes a long time to recover, chances are the battery is bad.
Third thing if the battery voltage is good recheck voltage at the starter to see if you get any voltage drop through the wire to the starter. If you get alot of voltage drop and the battery tested fine replace the cable if recheck everything. If your voltage is fine remove and bench test your starter.

GOOD luck , and happy hunting.
