The battery light only comes on when you are discharging the battery. You are discharging it because the load is greater than what the charging system is supplying. Usually, when the light is on, there is very little output, if any at all.

Do you have a belt on the alternator? Did you ever have a problem with it not cranking over prior to your bench testing the alternator? You mentioned it doesn't always crank over with the key. Is that why you had those parts tested in the first place?

will the light go on and off when your driving it? i had 2 alternators that would charge at 14v and then drop to about 12v and back to 14v constantly while i was driving.

i changed the brushes in the alternator and was good to go.

if you have a volt meter, check the voltage to see exactly what you are getting on the car

Check the resistance of the line off the alt to the battery. Those get old and corroded after 20+ years, and offer alot of resistance. They are easy to replace, and pretty simplistic. I would start there. The starter not working right is a common problem with these cars. Its a wiring issue as well. There are tons of fixes listed on SF, and im sure they are here too. http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=503046 There is a simple fix for it. But the alt is prolly bad wire between the alt and the battery. Let us know what you come up with tho.
