speedo lag

well, ive just installed a new speedometer cable from toyota, and it lags. when i start off from a dead stop, it stays at 0mph, until i hit about 25 or so, then pegs up to whatever speed im at. if i am driving, and almost stop, but keep rolling, it works fine. no lag.

could it be a problem with the speedo unit in the dash? anybody else with any similar problem?

Did you inspect the housing on the transmission where it screws in for metal shavings/foreign objects? How does the speedo gear look in the tranny?

thats kinda funny, my car does the same thing, and I have an electronic speedo.

yeah, i checked the tranny piece, it is in good condition, the o-ring was just replaced, and the gear looks great. the shaft has a bit of free play (1.5 mm or so) but i couldnt find a spec in the tsrm to check that against. the cable is brand new, and comes pre-greased from toyota. thats what the parts manager told me.

anybody think it could be the speedo unit in the dash itself?
