Shopping for an Mk3

I am trying to find a used mk3 turbo 5sp, and I want to know that I am not buying a car with a lot of mechanical defficiencies.

I know when a car looks good, but what are some things a can do to test it mechanically in a test-drive? Also, what are some common mk3 problems I should be aware of and look for (ie: BHG)?

first off what is your budget? You can always find a good cond. mk3 with engine problems cheap. Most important thing I usually look for is documentation of maint. and that will tell you if the vehicle has been cared for. (although all my mk3's I bought with issues and fixed myself)
