well im in the middle of a build and had the block decked but later i read the rebuild tip thread and saw that the rear timing cover needs to be decked with the block but then i think i read the front timing cover needs to be on. i guess im asking which one is it? and i am very new to supras is there a picture of the rear timing cover as i have only taken the head out and never seen the block out of the engine bay, with the timing cover on (im using a bare block for the build for those wondering) also i apologize that my grammar and spelling are probably terrible but i tried. thanks a lot,

Zach

Yeah, I was lucky and only needed the head straightened.

To answer your question.

The timing cover everybody's refering to is the Aluminum piece that the oil pump drive shaft and the crank go through, and the timing belt tensioner is attached to. So you need to remember the amount the machine shop took off the block and when you switch everything over to your built block ( I assume you have two blocks since you said you only took off the head) You need to take the timing cover to them and let them take off the same amount.

If you dont... Then you have dead space at the front of the head and block... The gasket wont seal. Therefore wasting your time and lots of money and headaches.

cliff notes:
~Aluminum timing cover agianst the block.
~If the top of the timing cover is not shaved the same amount of the block, the head gasket wont seal, probably no compression on 1-3, very low on 4-6. Not to mention the coolant or oil leaks.

ah thanks.. actually its a bare block with no internals so it would seem i need to get a hold of one of the timing covers then. and i do plan on going to the machine shop again as it seems the standard probe pistons are slightly oversized. i just wanted to do everything in one shot when i go back. timing cover, rods reconditioned and do a little bore/honing.

another question. which size mhg should i go with? .012 was removed from block and .010 was taken off the head.

thanks again,

Zach
