This is mainly directed toward shaeff since I've talked to him on various forums a few times in the past, but if anyone else knows the answer to this, feel free to give input please. Basically doing an MHG install, unfortunately I could only get the heads machined and not the block. Assuming the block is true and there's no issues there, I'm planning on installing the head gasket with the Permatex brake quiet spray quick and torquing it down to 80-90 ft-lbs. most likely. I was originally debating on using the copper spray instead but I've heard the brake quiet works better from a few different Supra forums(I'm still a little skeptical to be honest, but alot of these guys have more experience with repairing Supras than me so I'm going to take their word on it vs. people who've never touched a Supra).

Anyway, at the moment my main issue is just getting all the Viton coating off the MHG. I was using brakleen brake cleaner(non chlorinated, contains acetone, toluene, xylene, heptane, etc. if I recall correctly). Even using a rag to try to rub the Viton off, it's still taking forever(possibly the brakleen brake cleaner is evaporating way too quick due to it being so warm out?). I don't have a problem continuing on if I'm doing it the right way but from the way it sounded from others it comes off fairly easy. For me sometimes it would soak in a bit and bubble up so i could just wipe it off easily, but most parts i was rubbing for awhile. I've gone through 2 cans so far of the brakleen and I probably only have maybe 1/5-1/4 of the gasket clean. Just wondering if this is normal or am I supposed to be using the chlorinated brake cleaner, or am I doing something else wrong here(I'm guessing the non-chlorinated is right, just due to the chemicals in it being the same ones that react with Viton). The one other thing is the MHG is a few layers(off the top of my head I want to say three(top, bottom, and middle). Obviously, since I can't pull it apart, once I get the Viton off the rest of the head gasket, can I somewhat safely assume that the middle layer will be fine if it has Viton applied to it(little hard to see if there is or not, but I'm assuming it does have Viton between the layers). Sorry for the retarded questions, but with all the time/money/work I've put into this car and still am, I want to make sure this is done right. I'd rather spend a little more time/money/work and make sure it's done right then have to rip it down a few days after putting it back together and put more time/money/work into it.

Also, sorry if I've posted this under the wrong section, this was the closest I could figure that this subject might belong in. Feel free to move the thread if it is in the wrong section.

Thanks in advance.

You might try soaking a few rags with M.E.K. (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) and wrapping the HG in them. Let it soak for a little while, I bet that would soften it up well enough that if it didn't rub off right away the brakleen would work real quick. M.E.K. works a lot like Acetone, but evaporates much slower. I've never tried it on Viton, but it's cheap and worth a try.
