overheating... help please.

FYI i tried searching and didnt see anything.

Ok.. so most of you know i was asking on how to set the timing, thanks to the info i got it timed, and running almost properly.

now.. the bad part. the car overheats after 10mins of driving.

-replaced thermostat
-checked coolant
-heater blows cold

Could the VSV be faulty, and could it cause the car to overheat?
radiator appears to be leak free and in decent shape. i ruled out water pump because if the water pump was faulty it would overheat faster correct?

all fans work correctly,
also idles rough(revs nice and drives nice).. could the timing be off just barely enough to cause temp to rise drastically?


and secondly, (off topic question)
my friend put a dvd player in his car for his kids, but its set to only watch DVDS when the park brake is on, Can he bypass this with the accessory wire so his kids can watch it while the car is running?

i just took it for a spin.. and i have a coolant leak now all of a suddon.
its leaking a decent amount of coolant, it looks like its coming out near the back of the engine.. could it be a BHG? i kind of thought it wouldnt be a BHG as i just put on a HG and it runs great other then overheating.

i checked it about a week ago and it was ok.
im new to supra's so forgive my lack of knowledge, but why would oil effect coolant that comes out the rear of the engine bay?

Just put on a HG? What type? Who did the work? A glance at your other thread implies you did and from reading that I got a bad feeling....

i didnt.. the P/O did the job... he had someone do it for him, i have the receipts. its a metal HG, i dont know what kind though.

ok.. fixed coolant leak, the P/O didnt put a clamp on a hose under the I/M. so thats taken care of. When i was topping off the radiator today i head a loud burp and rad level dropped almost an inch, so i think most of the airbubble is gone now.. i didnt overheat crossing town this time, but ill keep you updated

for bhg you "should" have oil in the water, or water in the oil - or smell the water ... like exhaust gases? ...

there is no BHG symptoms, oil is perfect and coolant smells sweet. no coolant in the head, etc. doesnt smoke at all or smell "off"

did you ever CLEAN the radiator? sometimes amazing what amount of dirt there is ...

i inspected the outside and its pretty clean looking.. as far as the inside goes i've never used radiator flush before. im going to try and find a hill so i can run it with the cap off and see what happens.

i had overheating problems with no signs of bhg but removed the head and found the hg was bad i also replaced the radiator at the same time. but before that i did the tstat (to my surprise there wasn't one), rad cap and every other simple thing even flushed the radiator and still overheated after everything was said and done i can make 6 hour round trips and not even get hot. good luck and really it could just be air in the system, that gave me a little problem before but after burping its fine.

also if its a mhg with no machining of atleast the head then it could be a bhg.

if you feel you have a leak....pressure test the system...if you have a leak that will make it show itself pretty quick. i bought myself a unit that does it since i love older cars...and it has definitely worth it as it makes the job so simple. you can find them at big automotive stores...mine was about a 100 bucks Canadian at the time but i bought the better one. one thing to watch for however is the size of the piece that attaches to the rad (where the cap goes) as there are different sizes. i had to hook mine to the over flow nipple. nipple.

if you heater blows cold and you can see coolant leaking i would be checking your hoses..particularly the ones near the back.

if the system holds its pressure....then you have other problems. such as a possible rad cap or a bad radiator(plugged).

don't jump to the conclusion of a BHG since it was replaced professionally. don't rule it out though.

too me...a faulty water pump will really show its effects in abuse....so under boost....basically the water pump can't pump the coolant fast enough (or under enough pressure, since the pressure allows a higher boiling point) and you would begin to warm up...at idle and normal driving i don't think you would see the symptoms as much since the load is low and the heat is low.

well i fixed the leak, the ISC valve was leaking, the previous owner forgot to put a hoseclamp on.

Now to figure out why my heater still blows cold. (trying to bypass that vsv but its hard to pull up)
